Summer in the City (1998)
Author: Robyn Sisman
Genre: Chick Lit
Plot summary:
Suze Wilding and Lloyd Rockwell are participating in an
exchange program through their advertising firm. Over the summer, Suze
stays in Lloyd and his girlfriend's New York apartment, while Lloyd and
his girlfriend, Betsy, reside in Suze's London house. Suze is a free
spirit -- creative, assertive, and passionate. She's determined to
further her career and soak up everything the Big Apple has to offer,
including the rakish Nick, who Suze eventually learns is just one of NYC's
toxic bachelors. Across the Pond, Lloyd, too, wants to soak up London but
he's more straight-laced, upright, and prepared with his life. These
conscientious ways have seeped their way into his relationship with Betsy,
an attractive, smart, but passionless individual. Suze and Lloyd couldn't
be more different. But the two are brought together despite being on
different continents when Lloyd's position at the ad agency becomes
endangered. During their efforts to save Lloyd's job, the two can't help
wondering if maybe they're differences wouldn't be a perfect fit.
Geographical setting: London & New York City
Time period: Present (1998)
Appeal characteristics:
It's nice to see a modern female protagonist in
this genre who doubts herself at times but is ultimately confident in who
she is. The book has moments of genuine wit and charm. A good, different
spin on the "girl meets boy..." theme.
