Terry Brooks
High Druid of Shannara : Tanequil (2004)
Author: Terry Brooks
Genre (and subgenre): Fantasy (Darker Tone)
Plot Summary:
The high druid Grianne Ohmsford has been overtaken by a dark power within the Druid Order and taken to a dark place ruled by Demons called the Forbidding. Her nephew, Pendarin, along with an elf, a dwarf, a blind girl, and large group of trolls are on their way to rescue her, but are also working to escape death themselves. Pen’s parents are being held by the new high druid Shadara, who wants nothing more than to see Pen dead, in order to keep her new position. Shadara in order to keep her position is also making alliances with others outside the order, although none of the characters really trust each other. Because it is the second in a series of three there really isn’t anything resolved at the end.
Geographical Setting: The Four Lands (imaginary)
Time Period: present day for the imaginary world
Series: High Druid of Shannara Series: Book 2
Appeal Characteristics:
There is a high amount of adventure found in this book, with a lot of narrow escapes. There are also a large number of fantastical creatures, including elves, dwarfs, trolls, goblins, demons, druids, mutants etc. Although, I found it difficult to keep all of the characters straight. The book includes quite a lot of detail, and allows the reader inside the minds of most characters.

Red Flags: some violence, and a few sexual references
