Truer Than True Romance

Truer Than True Romance (2001)

Author: Jeanne Martinet
Genre: Graphic Novel (Chick Lit)

Plot Summary:
In the author’s introduction, she reveals that the reason she has unrealistic expectations about her love life is because of all the true romance comics she read as a child. To rectify this situation, she exacts revenge on those comics by using their original artwork, but rewriting all the dialogue and narration as a woman of today, with modern problems. The result is ten hysterically funny short works with titles like “Too Dumb for Love” “The Job from Hell!” ”What Are You Saying?” and “Loving Gay Men!” Interspersed with the stories are phony advice columns written by fictitious, dysfunctional columnists, like Dee Pressen or Tess T.

Appeal Characteristics:
Uproariously funny writing accompany the vintage comics which are amusing in their own right. The author never strays far from poking fun at the standard romance formula, but her viewpoint is self-deprecating in tone and she obviously is a fan of the genre so it never feels mean-spirited. The themes are modern – wretched jobs, bad hair cuts, stalking, cheating boyfriends and bad dates that would have a lot of appeal for women, and especially Chick Lit fans. It would also appeal to anyone who likes to make up their own captions for cartoons or photos. It is really a collection of short stories rather than a novel and makes for a quick read, or a book that you can easily put down and pick back up again later.

Red Flags: Profanity. Sexual situations.
