Buried Dreams

Buried Dreams (2004)

Author: Brendan Dubois
Genre/Subgenre: Mystery (journalistic)

Plot Summary:
Primary player (and magazine columnist) Lewis Cole’s friend Jon Ericson spends his time studying history, but when he says that their small New Hampshire town was once a Viking settlement, it could conceivably change a great deal. When Ericson is murdered, Cole looks to Ericson’s ex-con brother as the primary suspect and enlists the help of a friend with a rather shady background to help as he investigates a strange group of characters Ericson contacted over the course of his own investigation into the Viking settlement. As the list of possible suspects seems to widen, Cole finds himself in close call after close call as the tension mounts and he gets closer to the real culprit. In the end, as with all good mysteries, it turns out the real suspect is the one you least suspect.

Geographical Setting: New Hampshire coastal town
Time Period: modern day
Series: Lewis Cole Mystery, #5

Appeal Characteristics: definitely character-driven, takes its time getting started, intended for adult fans of mystery, as well as history
Red Flags: abundant profanity, one observed sexual scene
