Author: Anna Jeffrey
Genre (and subgenre): Romance (Contemporary)
Plot Summary:
A year and a half after her cheating husband dies, Dahlia Jarrett is convinced by her best friend Piggy to take a summer job surveying land for the U.S. Forest Service in Idaho. A Texas girl herself, she doesn’t care for Idaho until she meets Luke McRae, a cowboy with a past. Their relationship begins after a night that was supposed to be only about sex, but soon turns into something more. Together, they help each other deal with events from their past; for Dahlia the death of a cheating husband, for Luke his divorce from an alcoholic and his three children, the youngest who has fetal alcohol syndrome. After an unfortunate encounter with Luke’s parents, the couple is driven apart, especially with Dahlia leaves to take care of her sick father. When she finds out that she’s pregnant, she resolves never to tell Luke. However, three months after the baby is born, Piggy writes Luke and tells him about his son. Luke flies to Texas, and eventually the couple is able to work out their differences and stay together.
Geographical Setting: Callister, Idaho
Time Period: Current Time
Appeal Characteristics:
The characters in this novel are likeable because they aren’t perfect, and people are able to relate to them. Both Luke and Dahlia are represented with many personal problems that show up in their relationship, much like any real one. The character of Piggy brings a humorous tone to a sometimes dark story, providing some comic relief. Dahlia is also half Filipino, causing some diversity within the book. Overall, the book is a fast and easy read, with lots of dialogue. The author writes in details whenever necessary, and allows the reader into both minds of the main characters.
