Guilty as Charged

Guilty as Charged (2004)

Author: J.R. Roberts
Genre (and subgenre): Western

Plot Summary:
When Clint Adams – “The Gunsmith” – wanders into sleepy Waylon City, Montana, all he wants is some peace and quiet from his apparently action-packed lifestyle. But shortly after checking into a hotel and enjoying a quickie with the comely front desk clerk Emma, Clint runs into trouble when he’s goaded into conflict by the town blowhard, who gets sore and comes gunning for him when Clint beats him at poker. Clint kills the man in self-defense, but not before the bad guy shoots Emma. Clint is jailed for both shootings, and is quickly sentenced to death without a fair trial. He escapes and sets off looking for the three men he knows witnessed the crime so he can clear his name. He finds them and proves his innocence, but not before he enjoys a quickie with Rebecca, the comely bartender in the next town over.

Geographical Setting: Montana and Wyoming
Time Period: indeterminate (Old West time)
Series: The Gunsmith (#274)

Appeal Characteristics:
Extremely plot driven – the cover describes it as “The All-Action Western Series,” and they’re not kidding. Most of the action takes place in towns, so there’s no prolonged descriptions of the landscape or anything like that, just plot, the occasional fight (fist or gun), and two exhaustively detailed sex scenes.

Similar Authors: Jake Logan (Slocum series), Tom Calhoun (Texas Bounty Hunter series)
Red Flags: mild profanity, mild violence, incredibly graphic (and incredibly gratuitous) sexual content
